In the second Test match of the ongoing five-match series, India beat England by 106 runs to level the series at 1-1. Riding on the special bowling performances from Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin, India bundled up visitors for 292 runs in the 399-run chase.
Two standout performances shaped India's dominance in the match. Yashasvi Jaiswal's exceptional double century in the first inning, where he outshone others with the next-best score being just 34, proved pivotal. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah's remarkable spell on the second afternoon, despite a less supportive pitch, showcased his incredible skill.
Bumrah's 6/45 not only gave India a substantial first-inning lead but also highlighted his mastery of the reverse swing. He continued to play a crucial role in the second innings, securing three wickets to quash England's resistance. Ravichandran Ashwin contributed significantly with his graceful bowling, clinching a three-for and bringing his Test wicket tally to 499.
Together, these standout individual performances propelled India to a commanding position in the match, underscoring the team's collective strength and the remarkable skills of Jaiswal and Bumrah. However, India will be concerned for their batting, especially for Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.
Ben Stokes’ run-out changed the momentum
In the attempt to chase down a challenging target of 399 runs, England heavily relied on their captain, Ben Stokes. However, their optimism took a blow when a casual attempt at a run between the wickets led to Stokes being run out by Shreyas Iyer in the 53rd over.
With 205 more runs required and Stokes on the field, England held onto the hope of a competitive performance. Regrettably, a misjudgment in deciding to take a quick single proved costly. This incident unfolded in the 10th over post-lunch as the ball, guided by Ben Foakes' inside edge, rolled towards the square.
Both batters initiated the run, assuming they had sufficient time to reach the crease. Contrary to their expectations, Iyer, positioned at midwicket, displayed exceptional fielding skills by executing a direct hit, bringing an abrupt end to Stokes' innings. With this win, India and England will have a long time off, as both teams will lock horns in the 3rd Test in Rajkot on February 15.
