The 2nd Test of the India vs England series is very much in control of Rohit Sharma and his men as they have set them a total of 399 runs to win the game. With two days left in the game, there is no doubt that the Indians will have a lot of time to get the England team bowled out and level the series. However, the England batters are known to be very unpredictable and they might surprise the Indians once again. With Zack Crawley at the crease looking to still play some positive cricket it is safe to say that the game is still not over till it’s over.
It was also good to see Shubman Gill finally play a memorable knock after a string of low scores in the last few innings he has played. Gill finally brought up his 4th ton in Test cricket and his first at the number 3 position. This innings could not have come at a better time when India was looking to set a huge target for the visitors. His 104 runs from 147 deliveries were a glimpse of what he is capable of when he is in the form of his life and is well set. Before this knock, there was a lot of criticism that the 24-year-old batter had to face while he was not able to score runs in his last few innings.
The ultimatum
There were recently some reports surfacing regarding Gill that this Test match was a make or break for him for his Test career. It is said according to these reports Shubman Gill would lose his place in the squad and would have to go back to representing Punjab for the Ranji Trophy this season. This might be something to think about since there were a lot of potential batters in line for Gill’s position. The likes of Yashasavi Jaiswal finding success in the opening spot was also a worry for the young batting sensation. This hundred has by Gill will make the staff and management still keep him around and will give him a lot of confidence going into the next few matches.
There was never any doubt of how talented Gill is as a batter with his elegant stroke play and ability to pick the length, but it was important for him to give a great performance, especially against this strong England side, who are known to dominate every time they get a sniff into the game. The way Gill also celebrated his century by taking a big breath might also insinuate that this was his last chance to prove that he belongs in the longest format. This century was the innings which was needed to revive his Test career and we hope he keeps scoring runs like this consistently.
