India and Australia began their ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday with the first game in Chennai. The two teams had met each other 12 times before this with Australia winning on 8 occasions and India on four. The last time the two teams met was during the 2019 ODI World Cup with India winning the game.

Virat Kohli stamped his class early for India when he took an amazing catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh. The former Indian skipper along with Rohit Sharma will be key for India with the bat during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first on what looked like a very slow wicket in Chennai. The Indian team too wanted to make use of the conditions first as per Rohit Sharma. The home team went in with three spinners and two fast bowlers. It was the second World Cup game at home for Ravi Ashwin.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj shared the new ball duties for the Indian cricket team on Sunday. While just one run came from Bumrah’s first over, Siraj was hit for a four as Warner looked to break free.

Rohit Sharma removed one slip before the start of the third over to be bowled by Bumrah. The result was a short ball from the 29-year-old and a thick edge which carried to Kohli who flung himself in the air. Kohli completed the catch after a few tumbles as the entire stadium erupted.

David Warner was joined by Steve Smith as the two senior statesmen of Australia steadied the ship. Marcus Stoinis missed the game for Australia after failing to recover from a Hamstring injury suffered after the Mohali ODI

The Indian team was without Shubman Gill who hadn’t recovered in time from dengue. Ishan Kishan was drafted into the team and he will likely open with Rohit Sharma. There was no place for Mohammad Shami as well despite his impressive performances recently.

Both these teams had played earlier this year in Chennai during the three-match –ODI series. Australia had won the game thanks to Adam Zampa, the Aussie leg-spinner is the main spinner for the five-time champs. Glenn Maxwell who picked four wickets during the Rajkot ODI will be the second spinner in the side.
