The 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup has begun with the game between England and New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Like every other edition of the World Cup, this edition too could see some huge names retire from the game.
Post the 2019 ODI World Cup, it was names like MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina who retired from the game. This year as well we have a few players who are in the final leg of their international careers.
In this list, we take a look at the five players who could be playing for the last time during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The players in this list may bid adieu to one format or cricket in general.
Ravichandran Ashwin – India
At 37-years-old Ravichandran Ashwin is the oldest player in the Indian Cricket Team. Called up as a replacement for Axar Patel, the off-spinner is playing in his third ODI World Cup. Ashwin has already stated that the ODI World Cup 2023 could very well be his last. Ashwin along with Virat Kohli is the only surviving member from the 2011 World Cup winning team.
Shakib AL Hasan – Bangladesh
Yet another legend of the game and perhaps one of the finest all-rounders of the current era. Shakib AL Hasan has done it all in international cricket bringing laurels and glory for his country. The Bangladesh skipper is 36 years old and could call it quits after the ODI World Cup 2023.
Moeen Ali – England
The Englishman has been one of the key components of England’s success in the last decade. Moeen Ali played a key role in England’s amazing Ashes series recently. The left-handed batter had made a comeback to test cricket only to retire after the series. The 2023 ODI World Cup could be the perfect swansong for Moeen Ali in the three Lions shirt.
Mohammad Nabi – Afghanistan
Already the senior most statesman in the Afghanistan team, Mohammad Nabi is a bonafide legend. At 38-years-old Mohammad Nabi is well and truly in the final stages of his career. The 2023 ODI World Cup provides the Afghans a chance to do well and bid farewell to the game.
Wesley Baressi – Netherlands
The last time Wesley Baressi was in India was during the 2011 ODI World Cup. Aged 39-year-old Baressi is back with his team for one final World Cup. The Dutchman is very well known for his batting and wicket-keeping skills. The 2023 ODI World Cup could be his final act in such a long and illustrious career for the Netherlands.
