Match number 11 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw New Zealand taking on the Bangladesh team on Friday at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In the match, the previous year’s runner-up turned up with their A-game and went on to win the match by eight wickets. With this win the Black Caps have now regained their top spot in the points table with three wins out of three matches and also with a healthy run rate of +1.604.
After winning the toss, skipper Kane Williamson opted to bowl first as the dew factor was lucky to make an impact, and run-scoring would have been easier under lights. The New Zealand team did have the best start possible as the lead speedster, Trent Boult drew the first blood when he dismissed Litton Das on golden duck. Tanzid Hasan (16) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (30) tried to steady the Bangladesh ship but a fiery spell from Lockie Ferguson blew the Bangladesh top order. Ferguson struck twice in his first spell to leave Bangladesh reeling at 56/4 in the 13th over. Again, on this occasion, as has often been the case for the Bangladesh team, it was once again the skipper Shakib al Hasan (40) and Mushfiqur Rahim who anchored the innings with a partnership of 96 runs.
Mushfiqur was the aggressor in the partnership but as it was looking smooth sailing for the Bangladesh team, Shakib was dismissed off a brilliant bouncer from Lockie Ferguson. Once, the skipper was the Bangladesh team never found their way back into the game as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Mahmudullah showed a little fight at the with a couple of maximums to guide Bangladesh to a target of 245 runs. The star of the show for Bangladesh was Mushfiqur who played a brilliant innings of 66 runs.
New Zealand chased down the total with ease
In pursuit of the average total, the Bangladesh seamers looked in red hot form as both Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam swung the ball both ways. Eventually, Mustafizur got rewarded for his effort with the wicket of Rachin Ravindra who was dismissed for 9. But then stepped in Williamson, who was making a comeback and even missed the first two matches of the World Cup. The star Kiwi batter looked in sublime touch throughout the innings and combined well with Devon Conway to stitch a brilliant partnership of 80 runs. The duo played low-risk cricket and kept the scoreboard ticking.
But eventually, Conway lost his patience a tried reverse sweeping and was adjourned Leg Before Wicket to a flighted delivery from Shakib. But as Bangladesh sensed an opening in the match, Daryl Mitchell came in and looked to attack from ball one. It was courtesy of his batting which even allowed Williamson to express himself in the middle. The duo stitched together a partnership of 108 runs before, the skipper went off the field complaining of discomfort. Williamson was retired hurt at the 78 but that did not stop Mitchell who went berserk after that. Eventually, the star all-rounder remained unbeaten at 89 and was also chosen to be the Player of the match.
