England notched their first victory in the ongoing  Cricket World Cup 2023 with a commanding 137-run win against Bangladesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Tuesday, October 10.

Choosing to field after winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan saw England's openers, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan, provide a strong start under the leadership of Jos Buttler. The pair crafted a formidable 115-run opening partnership before Shakib dismissed Bairstow for 52 runs in the 18th over. Subsequently, Malan and Joe Root combined to add 151 runs for the second wicket.

Malan smashed 140 off 107 deliveries, including 16 boundaries and five maximums before being dismissed by Mahedi Hasan. Scoring his sixth century in the ODI he scripted a new record, becoming the fastest player to achieve the milestone in the 50-over format. Root, on the other hand, played a blistering knock of 68-ball 82 runs.

Bangladesh then produced a late counterattack as England could add only 68 runs with the loss of seven wickets. Mahedi Hasan finished with a four-fer despite conceding 71 runs in 8 overs. Meanwhile, Shoriful Islam took three wickets and gave up 75 runs, in his full quota. However, the defending champions managed to post a mammoth total of 364 in allotted overs.

Reece Topley was the star of the show for England

The England pace bowler Reece Topley seized three wickets within the initial seven overs, while Chris Woakes contributed with the fourth as Bangladesh faced early disruptions in their chase. In response, opener Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, both achieving half-centuries, aimed to stabilize the innings. The wicketkeeper-batsman and Rahim orchestrated a partnership of 72 runs before succumbing to Woakes, departing for 76 off just 66 deliveries, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 121/5.

Rahim then briefly collaborated with Towhid Hridoy before Topley dismissed him for 51 runs, marking the English pacer's fourth victim. The England bowlers maintained their attack, limiting Bangladesh to 227 in 48.2 overs, with Sam Curran claiming the final wicket of Taskin Ahmed.
