Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan in the first match of their campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023. A complete team effort meant that Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan with relative ease. There was a big twist in the match towards the middle overs phase in the first innings, which changed the match completely in the favor of Bangladesh. From that point, there was no looking back for Bangladesh.

Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first. On a two-paced wicket, Afghanistan got a decent start. After 15 overs, Afghanistan was 83/1 and in a good situation. From there, the match saw a quick turn. The drinks break helped Bangladesh big time and changed the game. Firstly, Bangladesh dismissed Rahmat Shah, which began the collapse of Afghanistan.

From there, Afghanistan kept on losing the wickets constantly. The skipper of Bangladesh was the pick of the bowlers for them, who was not just economical but also claimed wickets constantly. Everyone in the Bangladeshi attack aided Shakib well with crucial wickets from the other end. Bangladesh constantly kept the pressure on Afghanistan and added more miseries for the men in blue.

Mehidy Hasan and Shakib claimed 3 wickets each. Shoriful Islam claimed 2 wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman claimed a wicket each and reduced Afghanistan to a paltry score of 156 runs. From 83/1 at one stage, Bangladesh collapsed to 156. Bangladesh had a relatively comfortable chase and never looked under pressure, barring the initial blip in their bating.

From 27/2 at one stage, Bangladesh cruised to the target, thanks to a 97-run stand for the third wicket between Mehidy and Najmul Shanto. The two batters scored fifty and helped Bangladesh to chase the total. In the end, Bangladesh won the match by 6 wickets with 15.2 overs to spare. Bangladesh not just won the match, but humiliated Afghanistan with a dominating win. Mehidy won the Player of the Match award for his brilliant All-round performance in the match.ย
