The sixth match of the ODI World Cup 2023 between the Netherlands and New Zealand ended in a one-sided affair as the New Zealand team won the match by 99 runs. After having won the toss, Netherlands captain Scott Edwards chose to bowl, witnessing a robust start as New Zealand encountered three maiden overs initially. Nevertheless, the Kiwi batsmen gradually found their groove, asserting dominance in run-scoring. The opening duo of Devon Conway and Will Young established an impressive 67-run partnership for the initial wicket.
After Conway's departure, Rachin Ravindra and Young sustained the momentum, forging a significant 77-run partnership. The game unfolded as a captivating contest between the bat and ball, with Dutch bowlers making an impact during various partnerships. Notable contributors for New Zealand included key top and middle-order batsmen, such as star all-rounder Daryl Mitchell (48) and Tom Latham (53). The final touches were provided by Mitchell Santner (21), who hammered 21 runs in the last over.
The Netherlands showed a fighting spirit
The Netherlands side did not have the best of the starts as they would have expected with openers Vikramjit Singh and Dowd being dismissed for only 12 and 16 runs, respectively, resulting in a lackluster beginning. But top order batter Colin Ackermann tried holding up one end but the wickets kept on tumbling at the other end. Bas de Leede (18), Teja Nidamanuru,(21), Scott Edwards (30), and Sybrand Engelbrecht (29) all were among the batters who got started but did not make the most of these starts. Ackermann was the top scorer for the Netherlands team as he scored 69 runs off just 73 runs along with five boundaries to his name.
The wrecker-in-chief for the New Zealand bowling department was Mitchell Santner who picked fifer. On a pitch that had something for the spinners Santer bowled tight line and in the process also became the second left-arm spinner from New Zealand to claim five wickets in an innings. The star all-rounder was also awarded the Player of the Match award as he finished the match with a bowling figure of 5/59. The speedster Matt Henry also picked up three wickets in his spell of 8.3 overs that he bowled.
With this win, New Zealand remain at the top of the table as they have now won both their matches in the ODI World Cup 2023. Let us now look at how Twitter has reacted to this huge win from the Kiwis;
