In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, India faced Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After a great bowling performance from pacer Jasprit Bumrah, India skipper Rohit Sharma stole the show with his magnificent batting performance. At a great batting wicket, Rohit got off to a classy start as he scored the fastest century for India in ODI World Cup history.
Rohit broke the great Kapil Dev's 72-ball century record to register his 7th ODI tonne in the tournament. He also broke Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's record for most centuries in World Cup history. In his record-breaking innings, Rohit also became the player with the third-highest ODI century in the history of the game. He surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting, as he now has 31 centuries in ODI cricket.
In his spectacular batting, Rohit Sharma also scored the highest runs in the first powerplay for India since 2002. He scored 76 runs on just 43 balls in the first 10 overs of the run chase. With this performance, he surpassed Robin Uthappa's 70-run innings against the West Indies in 2007. It's worth noting that Rohit also crossed the 1000-run mark in ODI World Cup history, becoming the third batter after Sachin and Kohli to do so.
Rohit Sharma broke Crish Gayle's most sixes record
Rohit in his innings also broke the record for hitting the most number of sixes in international cricket. He smacked four sixes to surpass Universal Boss Crish Gayle. After 17 overs of run chase, Rohit had 555 sixes in 453 international games. Rohit has scored 121 sixes against Australia in his career, followed by 88 against the West Indies, 78 against Sri Lanka, 68 against New Zealand, and 56 against South Africa.
However, earlier in the game, India bowled well after a great partnership between Afghanistan skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah clinched four wickets and restricted Afghanistan to a competitive total of 264/8 in 50 overs. Apart from Bumrah, Hardik Pandya clinched two wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket each.
