India won the 4th test at Ranchi by 5 wickets and with this, they have ascertained an unassailable lead of 3-1 in the series. The 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy may be India’s greatest test victory to date but given the circumstances, this series win also ranks well above in India’s rich test cricket legacy.

Before the series, there was a sense of excitement about how this ‘Bazball’-led England team will fare in India as they haven’t lost any test series since Brendon McCullum took the coaching reigns of England. Besides that, India lost their two key test players before the series in the form of Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami and after losing the 1st test by 28 runs, KL Rahul was ruled out of the subsequent tests due to injury.

In a nutshell, there was no Kohli for the entire series, no KL Rahul for three Tests, no Jadeja for a Test, no Ashwin for half-a-Test, no Bumrah for the 4th Test, no Ashwin for half-a-Test. But despite all this, the Indian team proved once again that they are the comeback kings in Tests and proved that the future of Indian batting is in safe hands.

Gill and Jurel put on a masterclass on a tricky pitch

While chasing a tricky target of 192 runs, India was off to a flying start as Rohit and Jaiwal put up an opening partnership of 84 runs but as soon as the first wicket fell, India was 120-5 in no time. India required a further 72 runs to win with Shubman Gill and Dhruv Iyer on the crease.

One more wicket could have put India in danger of faltering but Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel showed nerves of steel and put on a batting masterclass on a Day 4 wicket which was keeping low as well as turning square from certain spots.

They put on an unbeaten 72-run partnership and took India home to win their 17th consecutive test series at home. Shubman Gill notched up his 6th test fifty and struck two towering sixes towards the end to seal it for India.
