South Africa bounced back from their upset loss to the Netherlands by 43 runs with a massive win over England on Sunday. Game number 20 of the ODI World Cup 2023 was for the first time played in Mumbai.
Aiden Markram had replaced Temba Bavuma as the skipper as his side was asked to bat first. Ben Stokes finally made his first appearance in the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Sam Curran and Chris Woakes were replaced by Gus Atkinson and David Willey. Reeza Hendricks was the only player coming in for South Africa.
Defending world champions England began with a loss to New Zealand by 9 wickets in Ahmedabad. This was followed by a huge win over Bangladesh in Dharamshala by 137 runs. Afghanistan then derailed Jos Buttler’s side with a shocking defeat by 69 runs in New Delhi.
England falter to lose by 229 runs
Chasing 400 for a win, the English were bowled out for just 170 runs in the 22nd over. If not for the 70–run final wicket stand between Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson the margin of defeat would have been bigger.
The day was such a disappointment for England as Mark Wood was the top scorer with an unbeaten 43. His knock came off 17 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes, Gus Atkinson also swung his bat to score 35 off 21 balls with 7 fours.
Gerald Coetzee was the lead wicket-taker for South Africa with 3/35 from his four overs. Marco Jansen began with the wickets of Joe Root and Dawid Malan. Lungi Ngidi accounted for the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and David Willey. Kagiso Rabada got only one scalp that of Ben Stokes as Keshav Maharaj ended the game with the wicket of Gus Atkinson.
Earlier in the day South Africa posted a massive 399 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. Heinrich Klassen led the scoring charts with 109 runs from 67 balls with 4 sixes and 12 fours. Marco Jansen scored an unbeaten 42-ball 75 runs with 6 sixes and 3 fours.
Reeza Hendricks (85) and Rassie Van Der Dussen with 60 gave South Africa a great start. The two batters added 121 runs for the 2nd wicket after the early loss of Quinton De Kock. England now has slipped to ninth in the table and is staring at an early exit from the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament.
