In a historic and touching moment, the legendary Chris Gayle of the West Indies, who had long held the record for the most international sixes, warmly congratulated Rohit Sharma for surpassing his milestone. Gayle shared a photo capturing a memorable moment between the two cricketing giants, both donning their iconic national jerseys adorned with the number 45.
The current India team skipper now holds an impressive record of 556 international sixes, accomplished in just 473 innings, surpassing Gayle's total of 551. The flabbergasting batter, who is renowned for his brilliant hard-hitting prowess as well as camaraderie with Rohit off the field, then took to the social media platform 'X' to express his admiration. He wrote,β βThe Universe Bossβ captioned his post, "Congrats, Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special."

Apart from Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle, no other cricketer has managed to hit more than 500 international sixes. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), Rohit Sharma occupies the third position with 298 sixes, following behind Shahid Afridi (351) and Chris Gayle (331). Among currently active players, England's Jos Buttler holds the 12th position with 165 sixes, while India's former captain Virat Kohli is placed 19th with 142.
Rohit Sharma also became the player to hit the most centuries in World Cups
Defying traditional norms, Rohit Sharma not only broke Chris Gayle's longstanding record of 553 international sixes but also surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's achievement for the most centuries in World Cup history. Tendulkar had scored six World Cup centuries across as many editions, a feat that Rohit Sharma accomplished in just three: 2015, 2019, and 2023. In the 2019 World Cup in England, the 'Hitman' made history by registering five centuries in a single edition.
Furthermore, his innings of 131 runs off 84 balls against Afghanistan marked his 31st ODI century, surpassing Ricky Ponting. This achievement places him third on the all-time list of most ODI centuries, with only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar ahead. In the same remarkable innings, Rohit Sharma also shattered Kapil Dev's record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian in World Cup history, achieving this milestone in just 63 balls.
Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this achievement from star India batter:
