The Indian Cricket Team swatted aside the Sri Lankan challenge to win the game and reach the top of the table. Rohit Sharma and his side now have become the first team to reach the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023.
With this loss, the Sri Lankans now have made an early exit from the tournament. Kusal Mendis and his team needed a win to keep their hopes alive to reach the final four. It was a disappointing day for the 1996 World Cup winners as they were outclassed in all the departments by the rampaging Indian team.
India was asked to bat after Kusal Mendis won the toss on a hot and humid day in Mumbai. Dhananjaya De Silva was replaced by young leg-spin bowler Dushan Hemantha. Rohit Sharma meanwhile decided to field the same team as they did in the previous encounter.
India hammers hapless Sri Lanka to reach the final four
Dilshan Madushanka silenced the Mumbai crowd when he bowled Rohit Sharma for four. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli then came together to add 189 runs for the second wicket. Despite losing their skipper early the two Indian batters put the pressure back on the Sri Lankan bowling unit.
Shubman Gill played some delightful strokes and looked set for yet another century in 2023. Madushanka got two big wickets to bring his team back into the contest. The Sri Lankan pacer first got Shubman Gill out for 92 caught by Kusal Mendis. This was followed by the wicket of Virat Kohli for 88.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer then added 60 runs for the 4th wicket before Rahul was out for 21. Shreyas Iyer though showed attacking intent right from the start as he went hammer and tongs.
The 28-year-old hit a 106 meter six which is the biggest six of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. It was all over soon as Shreyas Iyer was out for 82 to give Madushanka his fourth wicket of the day. Ravindra Jadeja then scored 35 quick runs to help India reach 357 for 8 from their 50 overs.
Chasing 358 to win, the Sri Lankans were blown apart by the rampant Indian seam-bowling trio. Jasprit Bumrah got the wicket of Pathum Nissanka off the first ball of the chase. Mohammed Siraj then got the wickets of Dimuth Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama before dismissing Kusal Mendis.
Mohammed Shami then came into the attack and got going with the wickets of Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha. The 33-year-old then got Chameera caught behind by KL Rahul for a duck and followed it up by dismissing Mathews for 12.
The fifer came when Shami had Rajitha caught by Gill in the slips. Mohammed Shami also became the lead wicket-taker for India in ODI World Cup history. The win came when Jadeja got the wicket of Madushanka to win the game by 302 runs.
