Team India won their fourth game of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh on October 19 at MCA in Pune owing to a sublime knock by India's stalwart Virat Kohli. Notably, the Men in Blue have already won their games against Australia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and currently place themselves in the second spot in the points table of the ODI World Cup 2023.

However, despite India's win over Bangladesh, Virat Kohli and the umpire have been the centre of criticism over the wide ball. Notably, Virat Kohli was batting at 97 runs when India were in need of just 2 runs to win the game; however, on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough refused to give wide despite it being actually wide in the last over.

Following the incident, a plethora of fans and experts have started sharing their opinions on the same. Notably, some people called it a great gesture by the umpire, and some have created a major controversy as well as started slamming the umpire. However, the non-wide call by the on-field umpire was actually the right call as per the new MCC rules.

The on-field umpire's call for not giving the wide was proved to be the right call as per the new rules

"In the modern game, batters are, more than ever, moving laterally around the crease before the ball is bowled. It was felt unfair that a delivery might be called ‘Wide' if it passes where the batter had stood as the bowler entered his/her delivery stride."

"Therefore, Law 22.1 has been amended so that a Wide will apply to where the batter is standing, where the striker has stood at any point since the bowler began their run-up, and which would also have passed wide of the striker in a normal batting position,” the amended rule stated.

Since Virat Kohli has covered his stumps and has moved before the ball was released, therefore  Kettleborough not giving it a wide was a fair call.
