India's opening batsman, Shubman Gill, has been ruled out of India's squad against Australia in their opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 8 in Chennai. Notably, India's top-order batter was one of the most prominent batters for his side, thanks to his exceptional talent in the 50-over format. Shubman Gill was the highest run scorer in IPL 2023 and guided his side to the final of the tournament.

The 24-year-old cricketer has played 35 ODI matches so far in his career while accumulating 1917 runs, featuring six hundred and nine fifties with the highest score of 208 runs. Speaking about the match, it was Australia skipper Pat Cummins who won the toss and invited the hosts to field first  during the play.

Meanwhile, India's captain Rohit Sharma revealed that they are quite confident in their opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023, owing to their best performance in the Asia Cup 2023 as well as the recently won series against Australia, which places them in the top spot in the ODI ranking. However, the 36-year-old skipper has revealed that India's opening batter, Shubman Gill, failed to recover, and Ishan Kishan replaced him to open the innings.

Shubman Gill hasn't recovered in time for ODI World Cup 2023 clash against Australia: Rohit Sharma

"The conditions are there for the bowlers, slightly on the slower side. We need to understand our lines and lengths early. We've played a lot of cricket before the WC, played two good series' and covered all our bases. He (Shubman Gill) hasn't recovered in time. Ishan comes in to replace him, he will open the batting," Rohit Sharma said at the toss.

Notably, Team India has opted to go with all three spinners owing to the spin-friendly pitch against Australia, and they will be looking to restrict Pat Cummins and Co. to a narrow score to win the marquee event.

Australia Playing XI- David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa.

India XI: Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
