Super Smash T20 League

The Super Smash 2023-24 is at its business end and has given us some amazing matches in the season. Wellington Firebirds is right now on the top of the table with 22 points on the board with 5 wins and only 2 losses out of their 8 games. Skipper Nick Kelly and his boys have been in form with both bat and ball. The 4 time Super Smash Champions are right now one of the favourites going into the league. Nick Kelly has been in great form as well being the highest run scorer for his team with 178 runs in his 7 games and leg spinner Peter Younghusband has been great with the ball with 12 wickets from 7 games.

However, the Last game saw Wellington losing their first game after winning two in a row which also included a win at the Central District Stags at their home ground. This time the Stags got the better of them at the Firebirds home turf. The Firebirds could only manage a total of just 148 runs in their 20 overs with only decent knocks from Muhammad Abbas and Logan Van Beek. Despite a slow start, the Stags chased down the total with just 19 balls to spare. Despite the disappointing loss, there was still one unbelievable moment that the Firebirds will remember for a long time.

Troy Johnson and Nick Kelly's amazing catch

In the last over of the powerplay which was bowled by Michael Snedden one of the most iconic fielding efforts were displayed in the match. It was Firebirds batter Troy Johnson that made it possible to run back from mid-off and diving backwards. While he was diving straight into the boundary ropes, with great presence of mind threw it back into play where skipper Nick Kelly with his amazing awareness took the rebound to dismiss Stags star batter Will Young.

This might have ended on a sour note for the Wellington Firebirds, but this was surely one moment that they will not forget. This was perhaps one of the best catches you will see in cricket history, which does not only show athletic ability, but also teamwork and game awareness. These were great scenes to see with even commentator Rob Moody expressing his joy in the commentary box as well and will be remembered as one of the best catches in the history of Super Smash.
