India reach top in WTC points table after Australia’s win against New Zealand in first Test at Wellington

India will retain the top position in the Test Championship points table if they win against England in the fifth and final Test of the series starting in Dharamsala on March 7.

India will retain the top position in the Test Championship points table if they win against England in the fifth and final Test of the series starting in Dharamsala on March 7.

New Zealand defeated to Australia by a mammoth margin of 172 runs in the first match in Wellington. Australia had set a target of 369 for the Kiwis. In reply, New Zealand was all out for 196 runs. Australia have played 20 Tests against New Zealand and they won 17 of them. This victory has given India an advantage in the World Test championship points table. This is because of this victory, India has overtaken New Zealand and reached the top spot in this points table.

New Zealand's points percentage has dropped from 75 to 60

New Zealand have won three Tests out of Five. They have lost in one. The New Zealand team have fallen to second position with 36 points and their points percentage is 60. At the same time, India’s point percentage is 64.58. India has won five out of eight matches and lost two. One Test has been a draw. India has 62 points. Australia’s point percentage is 59.09, they have 78 points. They have played 11 Tests so far and won seven of them. Lost three and one Test has been a draw.

Bangladesh are in fourth position with 50 points percentage. Pakistan’s points percentage is 36.66 and they are in fifth position. West Indies are at sixth position with 33.33 points percentage and South Africa are at seventh with 25 points percentage.

After losing to India in the fourth Test, England’s points percentage is only 19.44 and the Three-Lions have fallen to eighth place. England has played nine Tests so far in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle and won only three of them. England won only three Tests out of nine, while five have been lost and one has been drawn. Srilianka’s points percentage is zero and they are last in the points table.

As per the World Test Championship’s point structure, 12 points are awarded for a win, 6 points for a tie and 4 points for a draw. The top two teams in the point table will play the final in Lord’s next year. New Zealand was the first winner of WTC while Australia won their first-ever WTC last year. Both times India were the runners-up.
