The much-awaited 2nd edition of the Women’s Premier League is set to begin on February 23. After a long wait, the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League finally took place last year and before that, only a few exhibition matches were held coinciding with the IPL from 2018 onwards to test the waters for the WPL which finally came into being in 2023.
Similar to IPL, the WPL is expected to change the landscape of women’s cricket not only in India but also around the world. It will provide a platform for women cricketers to showcase their talent at a global stage and will teach young and talented cricketers how to tackle their nerves in critical situations which has been an area of concern for the Indian women’s team.
After the grand success of the 1st season of the WPL, the 2nd season is expected to be bigger and better. However, the number of teams and matches are still the same, there have been some changes that will make the league more exciting than before.
Let's find out about the upcoming edition of the WPL in detail:
Venue and Matches
There will be a total of 22 matches that will be played in WPL 2024. The first edition of the WPL was played entirely in Mumbai but this edition of the WPL will be played in multiple Indian cities thus adding another dimension to the league. The first leg of the tournament will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru which will include the first 11 matches.
The second leg of the tournament will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This leg of the tournament will include the remaining matches including the eliminator and the finals.
Format of the tournament
The format of the WPL is a bit different than what we are used to witnessing in the IPL. Once the league stage is over, the team that is at the top of the points progresses directly to the finals, whereas the 2nd and 3rd ranked team competes in the eliminator to play the finals.
Date and Timings
The first match of the tournament will be played between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as they were the finalists of the last season. The matches will begin at 7:30 pm IST and there will be no double header this year, unlike last year.
Broadcasting Details
The matches of the WPL will be televised on Sports 18 on TV, while you can enjoy the streaming online on the Jio Cinema App.
