India won the first T20I against Afghanistan by 6 wickets with 15 balls remaining in Mohali. Rohit Sharma invited Afghanistan to bat on a cold winter night in Mohali under testing conditions. Although the wicket at the PCA Stadium was good to bat on the atmospheric conditions and lively grass on the wicket helped the Indian bowlers who kept the Afghanistan openers in check in the powerplay.

Indian bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals and let the Afghanistan batters let loose in the middle overs. Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai stitched a crucial partnership with Mohammad Nabi being the aggressor.

Najibullah Zadran ended on a high by playing a crucial knock of 19 in just 11 balls with 4 boundaries and took Arshdeep Singh for 15 runs in the last over taking Afghanistan to a below-par yet competitive total of 158 runs. Axar Patel and Mukesh Sharma shined for India by picking two wickets each and played an important role in keeping the total under control.

While chasing a modest target of 159 runs, India was off to a horrendous start as Rohit Sharma got run out on the second ball of the innings as a result of a mix-up with Shubman Gill who was caught ball-watching. Shubman Gill tried to make up for his rookie mistake by hitting some classy shots but not for as he perished to the guile of Mujeeb ur Rahman for 23 runs.

Although Afghanistan showed some resolve at the end India chased down the target pretty comfortably with 15 balls left courtesy of some huge hits by Shivam Dubey who scored his second T20I half-century and made a huge statement to the selectors to consider as a potential replacement for Hardik Pandya. Mujeeb ur Rahman chopped the charts in bowling by picking 2 crucial wickets.
