In a shocking revelation, the English pacer Stuart Broad decided to retire from international cricket. The 37-year-old announced his retirement at the end of the third day of the fifth Ashes Test at the Oval. The veteran English pacer has bowled well in the Ashes series against Australia in all five Tests. The decision is hence a bit surprising for many.

In Ashes 2023, Stuart Broad has been the second-highest wicket-taker of the series and the highest for England. In 5 matches, Broad has claimed 20 wickets at an average of 28.15, at a strike rate of 49.10, at an economy of 3.45, with an innings to go. The right-arm medium pacer has been very good against the top-order batters of Australia.

A legend of English cricket

Broad has played a whopping 167 Test matches for England and claimed 602 wickets at an average of 27.67, at a strike rate of 55.77, at an economy of 2.98, including twenty 5-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls. The Southpaw also has 3656 runs with the bat for England in the longest format of the game. Throughout his career, Broad proved to be a handy batter down the order.

In ODIs, Broad played 121 matches and claimed 178 wickets, at an average of 30.13, at a strike rate of 34.32, at an economy of 5.27, with a best figure of 5/27. In T20Is, Broad was rather underrated. In 56 T20Is, the English pacer claimed 65 wickets at an average of 22.94, at an economy of 7.63, at a strike rate of 18.05.

Despite a good record in T20Is, Broad is remembered for his infamous six sixes in an over during the T20 World Cup game against India. Yuvraj Singh, who was riled up moments before the incident, created a world record and stunned the cricket world with his batting. Broad remembered the incident as he was questioned in the interview and replied saying “It made me a warrior and competitor what I am today”.
