The ODI World Cup 2023 has begun with a bang. In the first match England met New Zealand, it was a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final. There is a double-header on Saturday with Afghanistan facing Bangladesh, in Dharamshala. In the second match, South Africa will open their account against the Asia Cup finalist Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has been in brilliant form as they won 13 consecutive matches under the captaincy of Dasun Shanaka.
Temba Bavuma will lead the Proteas in his first World Cup. The opening batter has led his team to a comeback of 3-2 after they were 0-2 down against Australia in a five-match ODI series. Both the teams come with good form and with a mixture of experience and young talents on their sides respectively. The Lankan Lions lost their two warm-up matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh, respectively.
Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium has been renovated with a new outfield, seats, and dressing room. The pitch here is known for having a reputation for being spinner-friendly. As per earlier matches, the pitch has often assisted spin bowlers and spinners have enjoyed considerable success at this venue. Both teams have a good spin bowling department it will be a good fight against the spinners as it allows good spin and bounce as the game progresses.
Rain to make an interruption
The weather in New Delhi is expected to remain clear on Saturday, October 7. There is no chance of precipitation that will cause a halt in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The temperature could be around 25 degrees Celsius to 36 degrees Celsius, while the humidity is anticipated to be around 46-60 per cent. Fans will get a full game of 50-overs for each side.
Ahead of their clash against South Africa, the Lankan head coach said, "It would be huge if we could put a good show on here for them. And bring a smile back into the country's faces." Both sides met each other once in World Cup 2015 when the Proteas won by 9 wickets.
