The Cricket World Cup has reached its halfway point, and the excitement is building as the stakes get higher. The action has been thrilling so far, and that has kept fans glued to their screens. The Indian Cricket Board, as hosts, has tried its level best to ensure a pleasant viewing experience for fans. Free mineral and bottled water has been provided at all stadiums across the country, and some venues have even organized light shows to add to the fun. As such, a light show was held yesterday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi during the game between Australia and Netherlands. This was done during one particular drinks break and while the spectators definitely enjoyed the experience, Australia's 'Big Show' Glenn Maxwell was not impressed.
At the press conference following the game, Maxwell admitted that while the light show may be entertaining for fans, it is problematic for players because it disrupts their concentration.
When asked why he covered his head and eyes during the light show, Maxwell said, "I had something like that light show, a similar thing happened at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game and I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches it takes a while for my eyes to readjust. I just think it is the dumbest idea for cricketers when you have got this thing coming at you quickly and your eyes take so long to adjust. I think we had just lost a wicket and the lights at Perth Stadium went nuts, I was at the other end and it took me ages to get my eyes to go again and felt like I had a headache so I just tried to cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it. It is a horrible horrible idea! Great for the fans, horrible for the players".
David Warner's disagreement
David Warner disagreed with Maxwell's assessment of the light show, saying that he personally enjoyed it and that the fans are the priority. "I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It’s all about the fans. Without you all we won’t be able to do what we love", the tweet read.
Here's how Twitter reacted to Maxwell's views around the light show:
That is a valid point. Even if the lightshow experience for the fans is good, it should be done only in the innings break and post match.

Why if the audience gives their whole day to watch cricket, they can't adjust for a minute, this is for the audience and to pull the audience to the stadium..

Fully respect this point of view and significantly agree with it as well. Players can approach the match referee and communicate the same. I agree it might cause a distraction. Players must be listened to on this and they get to decide.

Agar koi Indian players mein aisa difference of opinion hota toh media rift declare kar deta

Loved this... one player's opinion can not represent the team's opinion, as proven by Warner himself. Now, the media and people will start creating stories about it.😀😀

It’s okay, Warner. Maxwell is also right as it’s become tough for the players to adjust🤗

In the match, both Maxwell and Warner excelled, scoring centuries to propel Australia to a total of 399 in the first innings. Maxwell was the star of the show, smashing a record 40-ball century to demoralize the Dutch. The Netherlands were bowled out for just 90, giving Australia a crushing 309-run victory, their third in a row.
