Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in Pune to register their third win in the ODI World Cup 2023. For this first time in the ODI World Cup, Afghanistan has beaten Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan has been having an inspirational journey in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. For the first time in the history of the tournament, Afghanistan has won 2 matches in a single tournament. Afghanistan has beaten sides like England and Pakistan in the tournament. It was their first win against both the teams in the history of the ODI World Cup. 

Fans have showed tremendous confidence in the players of Afghanistan. In return, Afghanistan has been very good in their performances. By beating Pakistan and England, Afghanistan has given its fans to celebrate the win in tough times. It seems as if they are in India for a purpose. So far, their wins have been inspirational and they have dedicated them to the people. 

Afghanistan has now beaten Sri Lanka in the tournament. It is yet another big result for Afghanistan, as it is the first instance of them beating Sri Lanka in the history of the ODI World Cup. The win makes Afghanistan one of the fewest teams to have a chance to claim a spot in the semifinal of the tournament. Their achievement in the tournament has been simply sensational. 

Complete team performance helps Afghanistan to beat Sri Lanka

Against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan bowled very well. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the bowlers, who claimed 4/34 in his 10 overs. Mujeeb Zadran also bowled well, as he picked a couple of wickets. Other bowlers chipped in with crucial wickets and helped Afghanistan to restrict Sri Lanka to a total of just 241 runs. On a wicket like Pune, it was a brilliant bowling performance. 

Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran early. What followed it was resurrection of Afghanistan. The trio of Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Azmatullah Omarzai scored fifty each. It was so crucial and the three batters ensured that Afghanistan did not lose any more wickets. Their efforts did not go in vain, as Afghanistan went on to win the match. With the win, Afghanistan has now climbed to third spot in the points table.
