The Australian cricket team was given a massive blow just weeks before the start of ODI Cricket World Cup. Opener Travis Head was struck on his forearm while he was batting. The left-handed-batter walked off injured as there is now major concerns about his participation in the upcoming World Cup.
The Australians are already fretting over the fitness status of many of their players. Travis Head was in amazing form with the bat in recent times. The injury occurred during the fourth ODI game against South Africa. Australia lost the game by 164 runs as South Africa leveled the series 2-2 at Centurion on Friday.
Travis Head adds to Injury woes for Australia
The Australian Cricket team was chasing 417 to win on Friday against South Africa. Travis Head was batting on 17 when he got a short ball from Gerald Coetzee. The batter was in immediate trouble as play was stopped and the medical team rushed out.
Travis Head did not bat further as he walked off the field. As per new reports now, the 29-year-old is doubtful for the first few games of the World Cup. The Australian Coach, Andrew McDonald seemed hopeful for the left-handed batter.
Andrew McDonald at the end of the game said “He’s going to go in for some more scans tomorrow. We have fingers crossed, clear with the World Cup, fast approaching”. Earlier in the first ODI all-rounder Cameron Green was also injured.
Kagiso Rabada’s short ball got Green who walked off the field. Marnus Labuschagne replaced Green to win the game with the bat for Australia. Apart from Travis Head and Cameron Green, there are other concerns for the five-time champions.
Star batter Steve Smith who is also the Vice-captain as well and skipper Pat Cummins both missed the South African series. The duo were out injured due to injuries to their wrists. Glenn Maxwell had recently picked up an injury to his ankle, while Mitchell Starc had also been out for a few weeks now.
Australia plays India in a short three-match ODI series which begins on 22nd September. This will be followed by their participation in the ODI World Cup. Australia will start their campaign against India with the first game on 8th October at Chennai.
