Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir, in a recent chat with Star Sports, opened up about the strongest batter who can make the biggest impact in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The premier 50-over tournament will be hosted by India from October 5 to November 19 across 10 different cities.

During an exclusive conversation with the prestigious sports channel, the 2011 World Cup final hero was asked to pick a list of batters who he expects to perform well in the upcoming World Cup. The interviewer gave a list of seven batters and labelled them as the 'the seven wonders of cricket' considering their amazing contributions to international cricket for their respective countries.

The list included the names of Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, David Warner, Steve Smith, Rohit Sharma, Babar Azam and Joe Root. However, Gambhir has named Pakistan captain Babar as the player he looks up to in the 2023 World Cup. According to him, Babar, the backbone of Pakistan's batting unit, can be fiery in the marquee event.

He has all those types of qualities: Gambhir lauds Babar

Gambhir praised Babar as having all the qualities a batter needs and believes Pakistan's No. 3 star will set the World Cup on fire. “Babar Azam. I think Babar Azam has all those types of qualities needed in a batsmen and Babar Azam can totally set this ODI World Cup on fire. There are multiple batsmen that I have seen who have so much time while batting and who time the ball well," he said.

“Also, I think even though Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, David Warner, Steve Smith, Rohit Sharma, and Joe Root are there in the tournament, but Babar Azam has those qualities," added the cricketer-turned-politician.

Meanwhile, Babar had a not-so-impressive outing in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023. Apart from his century against Nepal, the 28-year-old failed to shine in the tournament. However, Babar will aim to return to his best form as the Men in Green will begin their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6.
