India ended the ODI series in Bangladesh on a wonderful note as Ishan Kishan smashed a double ton to remember and sent a message that he means business. With Kishan also scoring runs and with Shubman Gill being in the scheme of things, it will be interesting to see which route the Indian Cricket Board will take when it comes to the opening combination.

Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan fared poorly in the ODI series against Bangladesh as he scored 18 runs in three innings, and this could be a worrying sign for him as he is being considered only as an ODI specialist. Dinesh Karthik who is not playing for India right now has sounded the alarm for Dhawan’s future in the ODI team.

Dhawan could well miss out in the Sri Lanka series- Dinesh Karthik

"For the Sri Lanka series, where does Dhawan stand? It is going to be interesting to see how they are going to leave out Ishan Kishan. Shubman Gill has been doing so well. If Rohit Sharma is available, somebody has to miss out. It could well be him (Dhawan). That could be a sad end to a glorious career. But some questions to answer for the new selectors," Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

The 2023 ODI World Cup will be held in India, and it remains to be seen whether Dhawan will remain in the ODI setup come the 50-over World event. Dhawan has been superb in global tournaments as he has scored 537 in 10 World Cup matches that he has played so far at an average of 53.70 and a strike rate of 94.21.

"Interestingly, if Shubman Gill had been part of the squad, he would have probably opened because he has been doing it for some time with aplomb. Ishan Kishan, given an opportunity, has taken it with both hands and really makes it count. This is going to put Shikhar Dhawan in a fix," added Karthik. In the contest, it looks like India is going through a transition period in white-ball cricket.
