The Women's Premier League(WPL) 2024 is set to begin tomorrow with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on the Delhi Capitals. This will be the second edition of the league that will take place with some of the best women cricketers in the world. The last season had a great response and we are excited to see these superstars perform in this franchise league once again.
The last season saw some iconic moments where we saw some experienced cricketers still showing their class in the form of Meg Lanning and some young talents showcased their talents with the likes of Saika Ishaque. It will be interesting to see the league being played in new venues and the auction giving us some new teams after the auction. The stage is already set and we all will be looking forward to the tournament.
Here are the 5 things to look forward to in the WPL 2024:
5. A Plethora of stars in Women's cricket
There will be a lot of stars that will be participating in this league. The likes of Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur have been one of the biggest stars for India right now. We will also be seeing some foreign stars like Nat Sciver Brunt, Sophie Devine and Shabnim Ismail in the mix as well. This is a given for any franchise league which will feature some of the biggest stars in the game who will be everyone’s favourite.
4. The Crowd is expected to give a great response
The first season which happened in Mumbai saw the crowd getting behind the players from the start. This was one of the rarest moments where we saw a jampacked stadium in Women's cricket. Fans were cheering for the players in the league. With the games happening in two different venues and two iconic cricket grounds, we are expecting great responses in the upcoming season as well.
3. The Chinnaswamy and Kotla will be a big challenge for the players
The league is set to be played in Bangalore and Delhi. This is much different to the previous season, where most of the games happened in three different stadiums in Mumbai. The team will have to adapt to the new conditions at the Chinnaswamy and the Kotla in Delhi in the second half. The team will also have to get used to travelling during the league from one venue to the other which will also be a new experience for them.
2. Can the RCB Trophy drought finally end
If there is one team that has been iconic even after suffering multiple heartbreaks it is the Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB). The last season of the WPL also proved to be disappointing for the women in red. With most of the games happening in their home ground and featuring some world-class cricketers, they will finally want to end this jinx once and for all and get their hands on the prize.
1. Abundance of local talent
The biggest thing we look forward to in this tournament is the number of talented players that will feature in this tournament. Even last season we saw some great local talent in the form of Shreyanka Patil and Saika Ishaque. There have been some more local talents that will be introduced to the league once again. Everyone will look forward to seeing these young players give some iconic performances like we saw last year.
