Australia are busy preparing for the upcoming 2-match Test series against the West Indies at home on 17th January. Cricket Australia(CA) still have some decisions to make after the retirement of their first-choice opener David Warner. The decision will be very tough for the CA since they have a lot of potential options in the mix. They will be looking for the perfect replacement for the upcoming series against the Caribbean giants who will be coming to the Aussies territory. It will be interesting to see the final squad chosen by the CA regarding the opener conundrum they are going through as well. This will Test the CA as well to choose the perfect replacement in place of Warner.
The Aussies have started this year on a roll with a 3-0 clean sweep victory over Pakistan at home. Pat Cummins and his side were playing some great cricket in the series where all the batters and the bowlers were in good rhythm. This is also another triumphant victory for skipper Pat Cummins as well who is enjoying his time captaining the side. It will be interesting to see what are the plans ahead of this Australian side who has already achieved everything last season being World Test Champions and ODI World Cup champions.
Steve Smith and Cameron Green to be potential openers
The squad for the next series might not have been announced yet by the CA, but the selectors have already considered Steven Smith and Cameron Green as potential openers for the upcoming series. This is an interesting decision since these two might be capable enough to play in that position taking into account Smith’s experience and Green’s attacking style of play similar to Warner. However, these two have been doing a great job in the middle order and changing their position at this time can also lead to some major problems. This will certainly make fans and experts curious as well, who will be thinking about who might be anchoring the middle order if one of them moves up the ladder.
Overall it will still be a big decision to make for the CA, to move these fine players in a position in which they have hardly played. There is no doubt that Smith is a world-class batter and currently one of the best in the world, but he has been an important batter at that number 4 position for a long time and changing his position will be tough to adapt to straight away, on the other hand, Green will also be bowling some overs as well being an all-rounder and for him to be moved to opening position can result in affecting his workload management. Whatever decision will be made in filling the opening slot has to be made with a clear plan on how will the two fit in this position as well.
