India won their second consecutive match in the ODI World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan on Wednesday, at the Arun Jaitely Stadium, New Delhi. Rohit Sharma scored the seventh hundred the most in ODI World Cup history. He broke the long-held record of batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who previously held the record of six centuries in 44 innings in the World Cup. The Team India skipper was tied with Tendulkar with six centuries. In 20 innings, Rohit achieved this milestone.
The batter also broke the record of former West Indian batter Chris Gayle, who held the record for most sixes, with 553 sixes in international cricket. The 36-year-old batter is now the player with the most sixes hitting 556 sixes in international cricket.
Former India pacer S Sreesanth praised the role of the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni in Rohit's success. The 2011 World Cup winner believes that Dhoni is among those people who never take credit for the good work they do. Back in 2013, Dhoni said Rohit Sharma to open the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Rohit achieved some great milestones while opening the innings for India. He is the only player to score three double-hundreds in ODI cricket.
After opening the innings for India the current Men in Blue skipper has never looked back. He is second in the list with the highest number of centuries after Virat Kohli by active players. Rohit against Afghanistan scored 131 runs off 84 balls and also broke the record of Kapil Dev for the fastest century by an Indian in the World Cup. He made the ton in 63 balls.
MS Dhoni would never say he made Rohit Sharma's career: S Sreesanth
Sreesanth, while speaking on Sportskeeda, said, "MS Dhoni would never say he made Rohit Sharma's career. I know him really well. We can say that because Dhoni gave him an opportunity. Why did he give him an opportunity? Because he knew that at that number he will do well. Be it Raina, Virat or Ashwin for that matter."
"Mahi bhai has played a big role even in my career, everybody's career. Nobody can change that. But why did he do that? Because he knew that if he supports those players, they will go to the next level. Maybe he gave the support to us that he himself didn't get," he added.
