Before the Indian Premier League(IPL) became one of the most watched domestic tournaments by the cricketing fans it was the Ranji Trophy that was helping us select future talents. The league started in 1934 and was originally started as The Cricket Championship of India. It is now one of the premier first-class tournaments where the young and upcoming players showcase their talent and finally get their chance in the national team. The Ranji Trophy follows the same 5-day Test format where all states compete against each other in a tournament that goes on for more than 3 months.

There have been a lot of talented players that have been a product of this league and have gone on to have some great careers in international cricket as well. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly before being legends of the game had to give great performances in this trophy for their respective states as well. Another player who has enjoyed a lot of success in this tournament is Manoj Tiwary who has played more than 100 games in First class cricket for Bengal and is averaging above 50. Tiwary is currently the minister of youth services and sports in Bengal after going into politics for the Trinamool Congress.

Tiwary against the Ranji Trophy

Tiwary has taken to social media and has spoken against the Ranji Trophy and isn’t happy with how it is being organised at all. His post on X states “ Ranji trophy should be scrapped from the calendar from the next season onwards. So many things going wrong in the tournament. So many things need to be looked into in order to save this prestigious tournament which has a rich history”.  This is frustration shown by the former cricketer which has led to fans questioning his statement on one of the most prestigious and long-running leagues in Indian domestic cricket.

There is no reason given by Tiwary regarding this decision and it was shocking to hear it from him who used to be a star in the tournament. Manoj Tiwary might not have had the best of careers in the Indian Team, but he is still one of the most decorated players for West Bengal. However, we don’t know the story behind his frustration towards the league at all. This sudden suggestion of scrapping the league from the calendar year from the Indian set up by the former player has been a shock for all the fans on social media.
