The India vs England series 2nd Test is going on and it is so far looking good for the hosts with Yashasavi Jaiswal still at the crease and the team on 225-3 after the 2nd session. Jaiswal’s incredible century at the top has put the Indians in a really good position to put on a big total in the first innings and put the England team under pressure. This is a good start for them while they are looking to come back after a disappointing loss in the 1st Test in Hyderabad even after they were completely in control of the game early in the game. Jaiswal and debutante Rajat Patidar will look to build a partnership to keep their side ahead of the scoring rate.
Even though there have been some great performances by the Indian players, there is still one batter who has still not lived up to his potential in the longest format. The batter in the talks is none other than Shubman Gill, who has been one of the greatest talents in the Indian set-up. The last 11 matches of Gill however, have been disappointing. The last test century of Gill came in the match against Australia in Ahmedabad last season and it is not looking good after that innings. The last series against South Africa has also been a very average outing for the world-class batter and he needs to find a way to get amongst the runs as soon as possible.
Manjrekar with his constructive criticism
There is nobody as critical as former India cricketer turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, who does not shy away from giving his opinion on the players. Manjrekar has represented India in 37 Test matches and was one of the most talented openers for India in his time. The former cricketer has gone on to say that Gill will need a solid defence to get better in Test matches saying "He needs to do something about his defence if he wants to be the prolific run-getter in the team at the Test level, both against swing and spin.”
This is constructive criticism by the former player who feels there are some changes which Gill has to make to succeed in Test matches. We all know that Shubman Gill is one of the most talented young batters for Indian cricket and it will be important for him to get back to his great form at the Test level as well. These are testing times for Gill and he has to learn from this and become a much better player going forward. The last two innings against England have further kept his position in doubt right now and we are waiting for him to show his great form.
