Paarl Royals overcame Pretoria Capitals in their first match of SA20 2024. A collective effort from the bowlers and a brilliant all-round effort from Andile Phehlukwayo sealed the game for them. Right from the start of the game, it seemed like a difficult wicket to bat on. Paarl analyzed the facts and abetted accordingly. They looked at a par score and tried to defend it.

The way Paarl batted in the middle showed their approach. Jason Roy, David Miller, and Van Buuren provided the impetus for their innings with the bat. It compensated for the struggle of Jos Buttler at the top. But the hero for Paarl was Andile Phehlukwayo who starred in the match both as a batter and as a bowler. With the bat, he added 28 runs in 14 balls.

It helped the Royals to reach a good score of 160 runs on the board. Pretoria did well to restrict them to a score which was par on that wicket. The likes of Dupavillion, Will Jacks and others bowled well. However, the bowling of Paarl was a notch higher. No bowler allowed the batters of Pretoria to free their arms in the middle whatsoever.

Obed McCoy and Lungi Ngidi started off brilliantly well. McCoy in particular was brilliant at the top and the death as well. The duo claimed wickets early in the innings. Tabraiz Shamsi was brilliant in the middle overs phase. Andile bowled well in the middle overs along with the left-arm unorthodox spinner. Fortuin did his job of containing the runs well.

A target of 161 runs seemed a bit too much towards the end for the Capitals. They just could not afford the game to slow down as much as it did. McCoy and Andile looked unplayable with their slower ones. Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw tried their best. But on a wicket that got increasingly tough to bat, there was not enough support from the other end, as Paarl sealed the game by 2 runs.
