South Africa is facing the five-time World Cup champions, Australia, in the 2nd semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India has already reached the finals after defeating New Zealand by 70 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and the winner of the 2nd semi-final will face India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, which has been the mantra of success for South Africa in this World Cup, but it backfired today as the overcast and humid conditions at Eden Gardens were in favour of the bowlers. South Africa lost their first wicket in the first over when Mitchell Starc nicked off skipper Temba Bavuma for a duck.

Soon, South Africa was 24 for four, and the threat of being knocked off for a low total was looming large on South Africa. But David Miller had some other plans, and on a wicket where other batters were finding it difficult to put the bat on the ball, Miller attacked from the get-go and took the attack back on Australia.

First, he stitched a brisk 95-run stand with Heinrich Klassen(47) and then a crucial 53-run partnership with Gerald Coetzee before unleashing himself towards the end and went on to hit his 6th ODI ton in a crucial semi-final encounter. In his innings of 101 runs, Miller struck eight boundaries and sent the ball out of the ground five times.

Miller caught hold of Zampa and hit two sixes in one over where he made a statement that whatever the situation was, if the ball was in his arc he, would go for it. It was an innings and sheer class that took South Africa from a deep peril to a respectable total of 212 runs in challenging conditions.

The Indian crowd got the glimpse of the dangerous Miller that they are used to seeing in the IPL every year and loved every one of his innings. Cricket fans from around the world took to “X” formerly Twitter to praise the southpaw from South Africa.

Here are some of the responses from fans on “X”:
