India and Australia have entered into the final day of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts took a 91-run lead after scoring 571 in the first innings on the back of two brilliant centuries from Virat Kohli (186 off 364) and Shubman Gill (128 off 235). After a slow start, India began to accelerate their scoring rate on Day 4, but they suffered a major setback in the process after Shreyas Iyer was taken for a scan with a back injury.

The India middle order batter did not walk out to bat after Cheteshwar Pujara (42 off 121) was dismissed on Day 3 of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (28 off 84) was promoted up the order instead. Similarly, on Day 4, after Jadeja's dismissal, wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat (44 off 88) joined Kohli. Later, the Indian Cricket Board gave an update that the 28-year-old Iyer had suffered lower back pain and has been taken for scans.

Iyer may miss the ODI series as well

Rohit Sharma's team badly missed his services on Day 4 as they tried to add some quick runs to take a further lead and the former India captain went without a partner as he looked to reach his double century. Meanwhile, in a new update, it has been confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the final Test of the ongoing BGT series.

The injury has also made the 28-year-old's participation in the three-match ODI series against Australia uncertain. The series, which starts on Friday, March 17, will be India's main assignment as they prepare for the 2023 ODI World Cup. While Iyer is likely to be replaced by Suryakumar Yadav in the 50-over contest, Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda or Rahul Tripathi are likely to be called into the squad.

Indian players have been plagued with injuries in recent years, which has not gone down well with former cricketers and fans. Star pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar have been out of international cricket for months and now Iyer too is injured. Jadeja was sidelined for a while but returned in the ongoing series against Australia.
