At the end of the second day of the first test between India and the West Indies in Dominica, India are clearly in a dominant position. After bowling out West Indies for 150 runs in the first innings under 65 overs on Day 1, India started well, thanks to a marathon opening partnership between captain Rohit Sharma and the debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The left-right duo of Jaiswal and Sharma hardly looked in trouble throughout their stay in the middle. West Indies managed to stop the run flow with their defensive tactics. The nature of the pitch and outfield was not conducive enough to score runs quickly. Yet, the duo hung in there, took their time, got settled, and set a good platform for India.

Hundred on debut for Yashasvi Jaiswal

While Rohit Sharma was at his fluent best, it was Jaiswal who impressed everyone with his compact technique and composure. On his maiden Test innings, the youngster showed everyone what he is capable of. The Southpaw played some gorgeous drives and unsettled the West Indies bowlers with his confident play.

Jaiswal became the third Indian opener to score a hundred on Test debut after Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. At the other end, Sharma scored his 10th Test ton, the first on the land of Caribbean islands. Ever since the Mumbai batter became an opener in Tests, he has been a different batter. Even with the added responsibility of captaincy, Rohit has shined.

The opening duo added 229 runs for the first wicket, the highest for India against West Indies in the history of Test cricket. The duo became the first pair to score an individual hundred in a Test innings for India since 2015. Alick Athaneze helped West Indies to get their first breakthrough, as Sharma was caught behind. Shubman Gill then entered the middle and could not do much.

In walked Virat Kohli and framed a good partnership with Jaiswal. The two batters remained in the middle at the end of the second day as their partnership flourished for 72 runs in 205 deliveries. Kohli remained unbeaten on 36 while Jaiswal scored 143.
