The group stages for The Hundred 2022 concluded with match 32 where Manchester Originals competed against Oval Invincibles. The Invincibles skipper Sam Billings won the toss and elected to bat first at Old Trafford. In a surprise move, the Invincibles promoted Rilee Rossouw up the order and opened with him alongside Will Jacks. It did not change the fortunes of the team as the duo walked back quickly.
The Originals bowlers were too good for the Invincibles as the skipper of the green team Sam Billings entered the field within 20 balls into the innings. The momentum continued for the team in black as they pounded the Invincibles' batter with short balls and slower ones. The batters found it difficult to get the timing right and started playing loose shots.
However, Sam Curran and the Invincibles skipper kept going and eventually started to find gaps as soon as they got settled. The duo started to ease the pressure off and began to put things together for the Invincibles. The skipper Sam Billings settled down steadily to bag a half-century and looked good until Josh Little deceived him. The bowler was on fire over the end of the innings as he bagged a double to pick up a five-for. The Invincibles managed to put on a decent score of 143 at the end of the first innings.
The Originals sailed through to the eliminator
On the other hand, Philip Salt, the man in form, and skipper Laurie Evans opened for the Originals. The duo banged on right from the first ball and steadied the path to clinch a win. The match looked equally poised despite the Originals holding an upper hand as the bowlers kept it tight.
The pitch at Old Trafford has not been offering much to the batters and it has always been bowlers' favourite. The Originals managed to clinch a crucial win with six wickets and one ball to spare
. Here are some of the tweets that we found interesting and worth sharing post the conclusion of the match:
Mixed emotions seeing Madsen as the hero! Disappointing for #ovalinvincibles, bundled out just short of the playoffs again. And again the top order’s lacklustre form was crucial. At least we have the women to cheer for on Saturday. Hopefully back-to-back coming! #TheHundred pic.twitter.com/IqsT3KqUGX
