The selections were questioned, and a lot of eyebrows were raised about the non-selection of Yuzvendra Chahal at the 20-20 World Cup 2022. Despite being a part of the squad, he wasn't included for a single match in the tournament.
A lot of criticism was directed at the Rohit Sharma-led side and the management for their choices in the semi-final and India ultimately lost the match. After a month from that heartbreaking exit from the semi-final, Chahal has decided to spill the beans concerning his selection in the tournament.
“It's not an individual game. Every team has their own set of combination. And then I saw Ashwin and Axar performing well...those things happen in life. I just knew that if get an opportunity I have to be ready and coach and Rohit bhai had clarified that to me,” He said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
I hope India become champions in 2023- Yuzvendra Chahal
After being given the cold shoulder in the 2021 and 2022 World Cup, he remains upbeat about him getting selected for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“The 50-over World Cup is going to happen next. The last World Cup which I had played, in 2019, was also a 50-over World Cup. I don't tend to think about all these stuff that much. For me, what matters is playing for India, that is my first goal. Now whether I am picked in the XI or not that is not in my hand. I hope I can continue playing in the same manner, get to play for my country and hope India become the champions in 2023,”
Notably, all teams in the 20-20 World Cup had used a wrist spinner in the in Australia. And, it was baffling to see that India did not use Chahal despite him being in the squad. He could have been used as a potent attacking option in the middle overs to pick wickets for the Men in Blue.
