Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's love for chess is no secret. The 32-year-old who has represented India in the World Youth Chess Championship, has recently become the ambassador of a team in the Global Chess League. Chahal, who will join the Indian camp for the West Indies series later this month, has now met with renowned South African chess player Jesse February.
February is a two-time South African Women's Chess Champion and a 1-time African Women's Chess Champion. The 26-year-old also holds the title of Woman International Master. On Monday, July 3, she posted a selfie with the Indian cricketer on her Twitter account with the caption, "Finally met @yuzi_chahal!".
Chahal is the only Indian to have represented the country at international levels in both cricket and chess. He recently joined SG Alpine Warriors as their ambassador in the ongoing Global Chess League.
"My first jerseys came from playing chess, and the sport has taught me patience over the years. And that helps me in my cricket because sometimes you may bowl well but not get a wicket, and it is then that patience is really needed," the right-arm spinner said in a press release on Monday.
Will Chahal feature in the Caribbean series?
Chahal has been named in the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies starting on July 27. However, it remains to be seen who between Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will get the nod to feature in playing XI. It will be interesting to see if India field both wrist spinners.
According to former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, there is little chance of Rohit Sharma including Chahal and Yadav in the team. “I don’t think so. Very rarely it can happen depending on the opposition. If there is a real weakness in the opposition to play wrist-spin, then you have Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal both playing in the XI,” Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo.
India’s ODI squad against West Indies: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.
