Marco Reus sat in the middle of the ground, shocked, and eventually burst into tears as the reality of narrowly missing out on the Bundesliga title on the final match day dawned on him. Borussia Dortmund needed just one win to clinch the elusive Bundesliga title, but they could only manage a 2-2 draw against Mainz on Saturday. On the other hand, their arch-rivals Bayern Munich defeated Koln to claim their 11th championship in a row.
Reus was a first-half substitute but could not produce the desired performance as Dortmund struggled to cope with the weight of the pressure after Mainz took a two-goal lead in the first half. Dortmund would have lost if Niklas Süle had not scored just before the final whistle. Meanwhile, Jamal Musiala's late strike ensured victory for Bayern at Koln.
The results ensured that both teams finished the season locked on 71 points, but Bayern had a superior goal difference, allowing them to claim first place.
'The whole city would be so happy for Marco Reus if we could...'
Sebastian Kehl, the Dortmund-based club's sporting director, told international journalists at a roundtable earlier this week that "the whole club, the whole city would be so happy for Marco Reus if we could get our hands on the title this weekend".
“I know what it would mean to him in his role as captain. Marco has written so many stories here and has done great things at this club for so many years. One thing that’s always been said about him is that he has never managed to win the title. I think that’s something that has always grinded away at him a bit,” added Kehl.
The German attacking midfielder joined Dortmund in 2012, a club he grew up supporting, and has remained with the club ever since, even as many superstars have come and gone. In his debut season, Reus helped his side reach the UEFA Champions League final and would have won two DFB Pokals, but the dream was dashed once again, breaking the hearts of thousands of football fans.
