India produced a below par performance in the first ODI against New Zealand as the Kiwis won by seven wickets at Eden Park.

India and New Zealand squared off in the first ODI at Eden Park in Auckland. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first. India got off to a great start with Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill scoring 72 and 65 respectively.

After stitching a 100-run stand, the duo were dismissed in quick succession with the score at 124 and Rishabh Pant also departed quickly, scoring just 15 off 23 balls. Suryakumar Yadav did not last long either with just 4 off 3 balls. India, as a result, had lost four wickets for just 160 on the board.

Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer rebuilt the innings for India with Iyer scoring a superb 80 off 76 balls with four fours and four sixes. Samson also complimented him well with a brisk 36 off 38 balls with four fours. The star of the day for India was Washington Sundar, who scored a counter-attacking 37 off just 16 balls with three fours and three sixes, propelling India to 306-7 in their 50 overs.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson picked up 3-73 and 3-59 respectively. In the second innings, New Zealand got off to a great start and raced to 35 in just 7 overs before Shardul Thakur dismissed Finn Allen. Devon Conway was looking good but was dismissed by Umran Malik with a quick fast delivery for just 24 off 23 balls.

Daryl Mitchell had a short stay at the crease as he was shown the door by Umran Malik. However, after that, it was all New Zealand as Tom Latham and Kane Willamson turned the game completely for them. Willamson scored an unbeaten 94 off 98 balls with seven fours and one six. Latham smashed a superb unbeaten 145 off 104 balls with 19 fours and five sixes.

The bowlers couldn't pick wickets in the latter half of the innings. Umran Malik went for 66 runs in his 10 overs despite picking up two wickets. Chahal went for 67 in his 10 overs. Washington Sundar conceded 42 but was couldn't pick wickets. New Zealand, as a result, won the match by 7 wickets in dominating fashion.
