After whitewashing Sri Lanka 3-0 in the ODI series, the ‘Men-in-Blue’ began their next campaign against New Zealand on Wednesday as the first ODI of the three-match series got underway. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers Rohit and Shubman Gill gave a decent start to their team by adding 60 runs in the first 12 overs. The partnership was broken by Blair Tickner who dismissed Rohit Sharma for 34.

Rohit’s wicket brought Virat Kohli to the crease as the crowd at Hyderabad gave him a roaring welcome. The star batter scored a boundary against Henry Shipley on the seventh ball of his innings with his trademark exquisite cover drive. It looked as if he was continuing his innings from where he left off against Sri Lanka in the third ODI where he scored a magnificent 166 off 110 balls.

It seemed as if he was set for another ODI ton, however, all those hopes got shattered in the very next over as he got cleaned up by Mitchell Santner. He stayed back to a delivery on which he should’ve been forward and missed the ball completely as it crashed into his off stump. Kohli was left astounded by the delivery as he gave a shocking reaction after getting bowled. He departed after scoring 8 off 10 balls with one boundary.

Kohli has been in sublime form of late as he’s scored three hundreds in his last five ODIs. He was recently awarded ‘Player of the Match’ in the last ODI against Sri Lanka and was also awarded ‘Player of the Series’ for finishing as the highest run scorer of the three-match series. He scored 283 runs in three innings at an average of 141.50 with two hundreds to his name.

Kohli rises two places in ODI batters rankings

His stupendous form also saw him rise in the ODI batters’ rankings where he jumped two places and went from sixth to fourth position with 750 rating points to his name.

Coming back to the match, India further lost Ishan Kishan cheaply after Kohli’s wicket to be 110/4 in 19.3 overs. However, Shubman Gill continued his brilliant knock and took the innings forward. India were 160/3 after 26 overs with Gill unbeaten on 80 off 74 while Suryakumar Yadav unbeaten on 28 off 20 balls.

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions as Virat Kohli fell cheaply in the first ODI. Here are some of the Tweets.
