The Australian team has announced a 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, but interestingly, skipper Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc may not be fit before the start of the 13th edition of the marquee event. The 50-over format World Cup is set to be hosted solely by India this time from October 5 to November 19.
Speaking of injuries in the five-time champion side, their skipper Cummins has a fractured hand, while the veteran batter Smith has a wrist tendon issue, explosive batter Maxwell has an issue with his ankle and the left arm speedster Starc has a groin problem. These injuries are evident because all these key players are not available for the ODI series in South Africa starting on September 7.
Australia prefers experience
However, key player absences gave opportunities to young players like Aaron Hardie, Tanveer Sangha, and Nathan Ellis to sweep the T20I series 3-0 under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh. The Australian selection panel, however, expelled Tanveer, Aaron, and Nathan from the provisional squad announced for the ODI World Cup 2023.
In the end, some notable inclusions are all-rounder Sean Abbott, who is likely to be a key member in terms of his batting and medium-pace bowling abilities, Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar are the strike spinners while Josh Inglis is in as the reserve wicketkeeper; along with the Alex Carey as the first choice behind the wicket. It is expected that key players from the Australian squad the likes of Smith, Cummins, Strac and Maxwell will recover from their injuries and will get underway before the World Cup start in India.
Australia's provisional World Cup squad:
Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa
