Australian opener David Warner has been ruled out of the remaining two Test matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to a hairline fracture on his elbow. The left-hander suffered multiple blows in the first innings of the Delhi Test and was hit on the elbow in the eighth over by Mohammed Siraj. He was later hit on the helmet by a bouncer from the same bowler in the 10th over of the visitors' first innings on Day 1.

"After further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series. It is currently anticipated that he will return to India for the three One-Day Internationals which follow the Test Series," Cricket Australia said in a statement.

Warner's place was already under scrutiny after his poor returns in the series. The experienced left-hander registered scores of 1, 10 and 15 in the three innings that he batted and looked far from being comfortable against the spinners. Astonishingly, two out of the three times, he was dismissed by Mohammed Shami.

The Australian team will now have to find a replacement for Warner, with Travis Head having opened the batting for Australia in the second innings. With Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc likely to return to the Australian XI, it is likely that Head will continue to bat at the top of the order along with Usman Khawaja.

Captain Pat Cummins had also flown back home after the second Test due to an illness in his family. However, he is expected to return before the third Test in Indore starting on March 1.

The absence of Warner and Cummins will be a big blow for the Australian team, who are already trailing the four-match Test series 0-2 after losses in the first two matches. They will have to regroup and come up with a strong performance in the remaining matches to avoid a whitewash.

Twitter was buzzing as soon as reports of Warner's exclusion first came. Here's how Twitter reacted to David Warner's ruling out:
