The Women’s Asia Cup 2022 is ongoing and Bangladesh women registered a crushing win over Thailand women in the first match. Thailand’s skipper Naruemol Chaimai won the toss and elected to bat first at Sylhet. The Thailand Women did not have an impactful powerplay as they compiled only 16 runs.
About the middle overs, Thailand Women kept failing with the bat and things got more comfortable for the Bangladesh Women. All that Thailand lacked was a valuable partnership in the middle order. Phannita Maya starred with the bat by scoring 26 runs.
The Thailand Women managed to gather only 82 runs in their innings and lost all their wickets with just two balls to spare. The team did not flourish at any given point of the innings and ended up paying the price for it. Regarding Bangladesh Women’s bowlers, Rumana Ahmed bagged a three-for and helped the side restrict the opposition to a meagre total.
Bangladesh Women emerge victorious in the campaign opener
Bangladesh Women, on the other hand, got off to a great start, contrary to Thailand's openers. Shamima Sultana and Fargana Hoque produced a great start with the bat for Bangladesh Women. Thailand Women’s bowlers lacked the experience to bowl against such a mighty team.
With reference to the powerplay, Bangladesh Women collected 52 runs at the end of six overs. The openers looked steady and never lost their wicket until the ninth over. However, a wicket from Thipatcha Putthawong in the later part did not help Thailand as they lost the match within 12 overs. Bangladesh Women won the match with nine wickets to spare much to the delight of the fans.
For the unversed, Shamima Sultana topped with the bat and scored 49 runs. She also deservedly won the Player of the Match award and provided Bangladesh with the much-needed start to the tournament.
Post the match, Shamima Sultana said that she was happy with the win and wanted to play her natural game. “Wanted to play my natural game and be there till the end. We bowled well and it was a team effort, the wicket stayed a tad low initially but got better to bat later on,” she said on winning Player of the Match.
