Team India has not had a good time since the conclusion of the 20-20 World Cup in Australia. They had lost the three-match ODI series to New Zealand 1-0 and they also lost the ODI series to Bangladesh 2-1. Other than things not going well on the cricket pitch, the Indian players have been plagued with injuries.

Jasprit Bumrah could not play in the 20-20 World Cup because of a recurring back injury. Mohammed Shami could not play in the Test series against Bangladesh as he was ruled out by a shoulder injury. Ravindra Jadeja could not play in the 20-20 World Cup because of a knee injury. Speaking on the same, 2011 World Cup fitness trainer Srinivasan Ramji gave his take on the matter.

When asked whether players could feature in all formats, he went on to say that it is entirely up to the selectors to take the call that a particular player can play all formats. He also mentioned that it is not wrong if a player chooses to play all formats. He said that it is the sole responsibility of the strength and conditioning coach to keep the player fit. He said that Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh played all formats and knew the exact toll that their body could take. He urged the players to ask questions and not blindly go with the S&C.

There should be a uniform training system in place

When asked why players are getting injured, he pointed fingers and said that mistakes are being made when it comes to the training methodology, recovery protocols and the like, He also talked about regular screening and fitness tests being done based on the number of formats played. There should be regular communication with all the players so that their progress can be tracked efficiently.

He also talked about a uniform training system that should be in place and that there should be an open line of communication between all trainers such as India A, Ranji Trophy and the Indian T20 League and they should work together to check the fitness of the players. A fitness program is essential. The fitness requirements of players will be different, what would work for Jasprit Bumrah might not work for Mohammad Shami.
