In match five of the Asia Cup 2022, Sri Lanka locked horns with Bangladesh in a do-or-die match to make it to the next round. Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field first as expected at Dubai. Bangladesh got off to a decent start but lost the wicket of Sabbir Rahman quite early although Mehidy Hasan and skipper Shakib Al Hasan made up for it by scoring quite quickly.
At the end of the powerplay, the Bangla Tigers amassed 55 for the loss of one wicket and the Sri Lankan found it difficult to contain the flow of runs. The Bangladesh batters started to get settled quite easily and made things easier for the rest of them to follow. Mehidy Hasan kept finding boundaries on a pitch that is usually slow and made it look easy while the skipper at the other end found it difficult to time the ball.
Wanindu Hasaranga, the aggressive spinner provided Sri Lanka, with the next breakthrough as he dismissed Mehidy Hasan which provided the way for his teammate Chamika Karunaratne to pick one to his name. Bangladesh started to collapse after a great start initially and lost their skipper Shakib Al Hasan right after. The team ended up amassing 183/7 at the end of the first innings on the back of Afif Hossain’s aggressive 39 off 22 balls.
Sri Lanka chased down the target with four balls to spare
Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis marked on to the crease and hoped to get off to a strong start in the do-or-die match. The duo got off to a flyer and started to smash boundaries right from the start. Kusal Mendis’ fireworks never looked like ending and they looked on course to chase it down easily.
The openers steadied the innings and brought the required run rate down before Pathum Nissanka made his way back into the dressing room for 20. Ebadot Hossain bagged a couple to keep things under check and made Sri Lanka work hard for their chase.
However, the island nation batters were on course to clinch the win as Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka looked settled in the middle. Although Kusal Mendis perished after scoring a fiery 60 off 37 balls, Sri Lankan batters kept sailing through. It was yet another match that went down the wire and Sri Lanka clinched the win by 2 wickets and marched on to the Super Fours.
