England and Sri Lanka drew swords against each other at the Sydney Cricket Ground in what was a virtual knockout match for England to stay in contention for the semi-finals. The toss was won by Sri Lanka as they elected to bat first. Sri Lanka got off to a wonderful start courtesy of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis.
Nissanka was very severe on the England bowlers early on en route to his 67 off just 45 balls before Adil Rashid scalped him up with two fours and five sixes. Mendis played a quick 14 from 18 but was dismissed by Chris Woakes.
When the score was at 72-2, the match was in Sri Lanka’s hands but England took a firm grasp of the game, by picking up wickets at regular intervals which helped England bundle out Sri Lanka for just 141-8 in their 20 overs.
Mark Wood and Adil Rashid were the picks of the bowlers as Wood picked up 3 for 26 in his four overs. Rashid bowled an economical spell of 16 runs in his four overs and picked up one wicket.
In the second innings, England got off to a good start from Jos Butter who scored a quickfire 28 off just 23 balls with two fours and a maximum. Alex Hales played a blistering knock of 47 off 30 balls with seven fours and one six.
There was a collapse in the middle order for England as Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali and Sam Curran got out and with the score at 111-5, there were tensed faces in the England camp. Ben Stokes stood strong and played a knock under pressure.
He played an innings unlike the Ben Stokes anyone knows and it was a superb knock according to the situation of 44 off just 36 balls with two boundaries which helped England win the game in the end.
Chris Woakes complemented Ben Stokes well as he played an icy cool knock of 5 off three balls and hit the winning boundary for the Three Lions. For Sri Lanka, the top bowlers were Lahiru Kumara, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Dananjaya de Silva who picked up 2 wickets each from their respective spells.
Twitter was abuzz, let us take a look at the reactions here:

It's all over bar shouting with England vs Sri Lanka match. England've won the match & entered the semis after New Zeland. Australia, last year's winners, have been left high & dry. Deep disappointment for Australian cricket fans who'r looking forward to another Australian final

Sri Lanka vs England, SL openers out for blood, good crowd in, Papare bands playing. Very 90s/00s vibe. Hope the cricket follows suit (in that SL dominate England 😅) #SLvENG #T20WorldCup
