South Africa faced off with Bangladesh in Sydney on October 27, Thursday, and the Proteas made merry with the bat in the first innings after winning the toss. It was their stalwart southpaw Rilee Rossouw, who steered his team to a score of over 200, with a magnificent hundred. This was also the first hundred of the 20-20 World Cup 2022.

South Africa were off to a flyer, scoring 63 runs in the six-over powerplay. Although skipper Temba Bavuma departed in the first over for 2 runs off 6 balls, his opening partner Quinton de Kock and Rossouw responded strongly to counter the Bangla charge. De Kock was dismissed in the 14.3 overs after scoring a blistering 63 off 38, bringing an end to a second-wicket partnership of 168 runs.

Rossouw, at the other end, carried on and completed his second T20I hundred in 52 balls and bringing up his highest T20I score of 109 off 56 balls. He hit seven fours and eight sixes, and helped South Africa amass a strong total of 205. On a day when virtually nothing worked for Bangladesh bowlers, pacer Mustafizur Rahman completed a tidy spell of none for 25 in four overs.

A tall order for Bangladesh

For Bangladesh to win the game, they will have to pull off one of the biggest chases in 20-20 World Cup history. Bangladesh opened with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar, and they have anything but an ideal start to a humongous chase. Shanto was dismissed for a run-a-ball 9 and Soumya for 15 off 6, and both the openers had to depart within the third over.

Bangladesh, as it stands are on top of Group 2 of Super 12 after a convincing victory over Netherlands in their opener. South Africa, on the other hand, need a win here since their first match against Zimbabwe was washed out due to rain, having to settle for only one point despite having the odds in their favour to win the match.
