The Legends League Cricket 2022 kicked off on September 16 with a special match. However, the official league began yesterday with India Capitals and Gujarat Giants facing off each other at the Eden Gardens. Amidst huge expectations, the two captains (Jacques Kallis and Virender Sehwag) walked on to the field.
The Giants’ skipper Sehwag won the toss and elected to field first. The India Capitals had a strong line-up with Hamilton Masakadza and Solomon Mire as the openers. However, Gujarat Giants had a great start as KP Appanna picked two wickets in no time. At the end of the powerplay, the Capitals were reduced to 33-3.
Ashley Nurse and Denesh Ramdin kept ticking in the middle overs while the former switched gears in quick succession. However, a double-wicket twelfth over from Thisara Perera changed things around with the former clinging at the other end running out of partners.
However, Nurse ensured to stay till the end and produced a monstrous innings to bag a century to his name. On the back of his classy hitting in the death overs, the Capitals put on a total of 179 at the end of the first innings.
The class of Gujarat Giants
Gujarat Giants’ skipper Virender Sehwag and Kevin O'Brien opened the innings for the team. The Irish star was on fire right from ball one and his boundaries skyrocketed the team’s total to 58 at the end of the powerplay. The team’s skipper returned within the powerplay making way for the southpaw, Parthiv Patel.
The Capitals’ bowlers struggled to control the Ireland star’s wrath as the boundaries kept coming off his bat. The southpaw, on the other hand, managed to bag a few maximums on his part. At the end of the 12th over, Gujarat Giants looked in a strong position at 124/2.
The team crossed the 160-run mark at the end of the sixteenth over and lost only two wickets until then. The Capitals’ bowlers bounced back as the opponents lost five wickets for the next eighteen runs. However, Gujarat Giants clinched the match by three wickets in the end on the back of a great century from Kevin O'Brien.
It was a cracker of a game and fans had fun tweeting about it.
