In what was a great advertisement for women’s cricket, India Women and Australia Women battled it out in a game for the ages as they battled out for a result in the super over. In the end, India won a cliffhanger by 5 runs after the scores were tied at 187.

After India received a nine-wicket hammering in the first ODI against Australia the two sides locked horns again at the DY Patil Sports academy in Mumbai. India won the toss and chose to bowl. With good batting conditions on offer, Australia seized the momentum.

Alyssa Healy provided the perfect start to the visitors as she scored a quickfire 25 from 15 balls with five fours before she was dismissed by Deepti Sharma. After that, it was only one-way traffic as Australia sent the Indian bowlers on a leather hunt. Beth Mooney scored a sublime unbeaten 82 off 54 balls with 13 fours and she was provided support by Tahlia McGrath.

She was equally dominating and treated the Indian bowlers with disdain en route to her superb 70 off 51 balls with 10 fours and 1 six. Australia ended with a daunting 187-1 in their 20 overs. Deepti was the pick of the bowlers for India as she picked 1-31 in her four overs. The rest of the bowlers had an off day with the ball.

In the second innings, the Indian Opening combination of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma used the power play well and got off to a wonderful start as Mandhana smashed 79 off 49 balls with nine fours and four sixes. Verma hit a quickfire 34 off 23 balls with four fours and 1 six.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur fell quickly, but some big hitting from Richa Ghosh and Devika Vaidya who scored an unbeaten 26 off 13 with three sixes and an unbeaten 11 off 5 balls to tie the scores at 187-5. India needed 14 runs off 5 balls in the last over, and they came through thanks to Vaidya’s timely fours, one of which came off the last ball and helped India to level the scores.

The first super over was bowled by Heather Graham. Mandhana and Ghosh walked out to bat for India. They hit 21 runs in that over. The target for Australia was 22. Renuka Singh bowled the super over for India and got the dangerous Ashleigh Gardner out. She went for 16 in that over and ensured a five-run win for India.
